Downward mobility. Yes, it flies in the face of those chasing the American Dream. God has never been impressed with our fancy clothes, shiny cars or elaborate homes. He has bigger concerns…the purity of our heart. Why? Because that is where He desires to live and rule. The heart of man is His chosen place to dwell and govern the affairs of life from. He could have chosen any place in the universe or beyond to dwell. And yet, He chooses to dwell in our hearts when we surrender to Him through faith!
It is easy for all of us to get caught up in the rat race of stuff, stuff and more stuff. Accumulating things we don’t need with money we don’t have for egos we shouldn’t hold. But, what if we discovered that the way up is down?
What if Jesus actually meant these words?
“And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.” (Luke 9:48)
What would our churches look like if we believed this?
What would our Pastors/Elders act like if we really embraced this as true?
The recent tragedies at Aurora and Sandy Hook elementary school and society’s cry and outrage announce, though undetected by most, that realness and the answers which only the Gospel of Jesus Christ can offer are greatly needed for our generation. Not shallow programs, hollow sermons or silly musicals….but the Gospel.
Oh Lord, shake us from our corporate paradigm of church and family success, and redefine us according to Your teachings.
